John H. Maville graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1967. He served as State's Attorney for Boone County, Illinois (Belvidere) from 1968 to 1980. He has been engaged in the general practice of law, with an emphasis on estate planning and administration, real estate and general civil litigation, in Belvidere, for more than 50 years.

He is an active member of the Illinois State Bar Association, serving as chair of the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section Council from 1998 to 1999. Before that, he was newsletter editor for the section council for several years, vice-chair and secretary. He currently serves as newsletter editor of the Senior Lawyers Section Council of the Illinois State Bar Association. He has been a frequent speaker at Illinois State Bar Association continuing legal education courses on family law, law office management, and various other subjects of interest to general practitioners.

In 2004, the Illinois State Bar Association awarded him its Tradition of Excellence Award, an award given to one lawyer each year in recognition of contributions to the general practice of law.

He was on the faculty of the Illinois Professional Responsibility Institute, a group of speakers who provided educational programs for the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois. He is a past chair of the Northern Illinois Law Enforcement Commission, a former instructor in the Police Science program at Rock Valley College, Rockford, Illinois, and past president of the Boone County Bar Association. He has also been admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois. He acted as board counsel for the Belvidere Board of Realtors for more than 20 years.

He is co-author of "The Illinois Survival Guide-Best Practices for New Lawyers", published by the American Bar Association.

He was a member and eventually president of the Belvidere Jaycees, served on the board of directors of the Belvidere YMCA and was a director for the Belvidere Boone County Chamber of Commerce for a number of years. He currently serves on the boards of the Boone County Council on Aging Endowment Group, the District 100 Foundation for Excellence in Education, and the Cemetery Association of Belvidere.

Mr. Maville's roots in Boone County go deep. In addition to his practicing law and residing in the County for more than 50 years, his parents were teachers in the North Boone School District prior to their retirement.

As State's Attorney for Boone County for 12 years, Mr. Maville acquired extensive trial experience handling criminal cases ranging from murder to traffic and ordinance violations, as well as major civil litigation for Boone County. If it becomes necessary to go to trial in your case, you can be confident that your matter will be investigated thoroughly and tried competently. During his career, he has handled thousands of civil matters, ranging from high profile divorce cases to sophisticated estate planning. He enjoys his clients and the practice of law.

Away from the office, Mr. Maville enjoys reading, gardening, golf, photography, learning more about computers, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
